The added bite of the ginger in this ginger beer mocktail makes this one extra special with the great flavors of winter with grapefruit juice!
While we love a good cocktail (hello, that’s what our site is based on!), there is something nice about having a non alcoholic mixed drink, like our Sparkling Tropical Mocktail as well. So, why not feature some of our favorite seasonal flavors in this one? Make a Grapefruit Margarita, too!
If you are asking what is a mocktail? It is a non alcoholic mixed drink! Simple as that. It’s a drink that calls for a few ingredients that are mixed together, just like in a cocktail. Just no alcohol. You can make a lot of classic cocktails into mocktail recipes, and we have been on a mocktail kick lately. A mocktail version of a traditional Moscow Mule is a virgin Moscow mule usually just leaving out the vodka.
This delicious mocktail is inspired by a virgin Moscow mule but with more juice and is the perfect sipper with no added sugar. Other non alcoholic drinks are our Grapefruit Spritzer, Non-Alcoholic Sangria, and Lemon Non-Alcoholic Spritzer.

We are big fans of ginger, grapefruit, and bubbly drinks which is why we made this ginger beer mocktail recipe. Try our Cranberry Mocktail too, which is a take on a Cranberry Mule Mocktail.
What Ingredients are Needed for this Ginger Beer Mocktail?
You just need 4 simple ingredients for this non alcoholic drink which are sure to please your taste buds any time of day.
- Grapefruit Juice – of course, fresh grapefruit juice is the best choice! But, if you can only use bottled, that is fine, too.
- Lime Juice – as always, fresh squeezed juice is best!
- Stevia Simple Syrup – we used Stevia simple syrup in this to cut the calories and sugar, but feel free to use any simple syrup recipe you would like. We even have some other flavor options for this below.
- Ginger Beer – this adds the tang and bite to the cocktail, ginger beer is a complex flavor and really offsets the fresh citrus juice. Ginger beer is a naturally sweetened, naturally fermented and carbonated beverage. This drink is considered non alcoholic because their alcohol content is so low. It is similar to kombucha with the fermenting.
Mocktails are and have been a big trend this year in restaurants and bars, and we want to include some variety into our drink rotation. We definitely will be experimenting with mocktails in 2020. Make sure to click that link to see all our non alcoholic cocktails! Try it in our Alcohol Free Mulled Wine or Sparkling Pine Mocktail, too!
We think it is best to seek out a high quality ginger beer for this mocktail. Many ginger beers are all sugar and contain little to no real ginger. Ginger beer should taste like freshly juiced ginger. Our favorite brand is Fever Tree, which makes an incredible natural ginger beer that is very low in sugar. (Win!)
How to Make this Ginger Beer Mocktail
This is a super simple refreshing drink recipe to make! First, simply combine the grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Then, shake and strain into a rocks glass with fresh crushed ice. Top with the spicy ginger beer, and finally garnish if you would like.
Now, typically whenever we serve anything with grapefruit juice it’s with gin. And please feel free to add some to this great sip, but if you want to not have the extra calories, we get it! This ginger beer mocktail is a perfect mocktail to suit your non alcoholic needs. Try a Non-Alcoholic Cranberry Gin and Tonic, too!
Tips & Tricks
- Ginger Ale or Ginger Beer – yes, there is a difference. Ginger beer has been brewed and fermented, but has less carbonation than ginger ale. The ginger flavor stands out for sure, it’s stronger and spicier. Most ginger beers use fresh ginger root, sugar and yeast, along with other flavors to achieve their taste profile, which is a strong ginger flavor. Ginger ale is carbonated water flavored with ginger. It’s lighter in color and a lighter flavor. You can use ginger ale if you would like, but it won’t be as gingery as the ginger beer.
- Simple Syrup – homemade Stevia simple syrup is always the perfect choice. Of course the cheapest option is to make it yourself, not bought at your local grocery store. Or, if you would like, you can use a flavored regular simple syrup like mint syrup, rosemary syrup or homemade simple syrup instead. If you don’t want the sugar, try maple syrup like in our Maple Mocktail.
- Glassware – being that this is a close take on a Moscow Mule, you can totally use a copper mug, so a Moscow mule mocktail. But, we loved how it looked in a rocks glass, but a tall glass like a highball or double rocks glass is a great option, too!
- Garnish – we used mint because of the freshness and scent, but a slice of grapefruit, slice of lime, jalapeno slices or more would work great!
Cheers!
