How to Make Easy Homemade Mint Syrup

A fresh, herbal mint simple syrup that has so many uses in cocktails, desserts or fruit salads!

 

One of the most common questions we get asked as is how to make various flavored simple syrupsSimple syrup can be an integral part of craft cocktails, by adding sweetness and flavor to make the drink just right. Such an important part of cocktail making, and yet it is really simple! Regular plain simple syrup is just sugar and water, and rich simple syrup is just double the sugar.

 

Mint Simple Syrup

One that we always are asked about is mint simple syrup, which we use in a whole bunch of cocktails like a Mint Julep for Derby Day, Mint Collins, or added to Hot Chocolate for a mint chocolate non-alcoholic option.

Minty simple syrup is one of our favorite flavored simple syrups to make because it is extremely versatile and one that brings a whole bunch of flavor! Cool and crisp tasting, it’s a perfect way to bring a delicious refreshing mint flavor to cocktails, drinks or frozen treats alike! Try our Lilac syrup, or Lavender Simple Syrup too!

We are lucky enough to have our own herb garden where we grow a whole bunch of fresh herbs that we use in cooking and drink making. One of the easiest to grow is mint, as it does really well in a pot, making it perfect for use in the kitchen as you can keep a small pot handy for fresh mint sprigs! In fact, most gardeners tell you to grow mint in a pot because it tends to grow like wildfire and takes over your whole garden!

Making simple syrup is really quite easy, it is just sugar water. First use equal parts water and white sugar and bring to a boil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once the sugar dissolves and brought to a boil, remove from heat and add in the fresh mint leaves. Allow the mint leaves to steep in the hot syrup about 15 minutes, then strain out the leaves using a fine-mesh strainer!

 

Don’t leave the mint in too long or the syrup will have a bitter taste. Let the finished syrup cool to room temperature. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

 

The result is a syrup with a cool, fresh minty sweetness that avoids having overly artificial flavors like some chewing gums or some creme de menthe. Especially perfect for summer months used in cold drinks!

Can Simple Syrups go bad?

They can get moldy if they sit too long. We encourage you to store it in the fridge in a bottle or jar, but for no more than one to two weeks. We actually have a whole shelf of simple syrups in our fridge at any given time! Fall time it is Apple Cider Simple Syrup and Cinnamon Syrup!

 

Tips & Tricks

  • Sweetener – you can switch up the type of sugar in this recipe. We use granulated sugar, but other options could be brown sugar, honey, coconut sugar, organic cane sugar, or maple syrup. This will change flavors in cocktail recipes, so play with it and see what you like.
  • Other Uses – you can use homemade syrups as an easy way to add sweetness to cake layers or other desserts. Or, in mocktails with syrup and club soda. Take your recipes to the next level!

Mint Simple Syrup

Cook Time: 10 minutes

A mint simple syrup for cocktails, mocktails and even desserts!

Ingredients

Mint Simple Syrup

  • 6 sprigs of fresh mint (full sprigs not just leaves)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

Place sugar and water in a small saucepan.

Bring to a boil, stirring to fully dissolve the sugar.

Remove from heat.

Add mint sprigs into the hot syrup and steep until cool.

Strain mint from syrup.

Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

I have looked through the whole page many times and cannot see the amount of mint to use in proportion to the 1:1 of the sugar and water. Am I just missing it? Loralee

Hi Loralee, there is a recipe card near the bottom of the post. If you hit the "jump to recipe" button it will take you right to it. But, the recipe calls for 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water and 6 sprigs of fresh mint. Hope that helps! Cheers, Leah

I have a big patch of fresh mint that's trying to take over my garden, so I'm constantly on the lookout for new things I can make with mint so that I can try to keep that patch under control.
