This basil simple syrup is perfect for drinks and cocktails!
As in our previous post about the Rosemary simple syrup, we covered the great uses for simple syrup. We enjoy using fresh herbs from our garden and the farmer’s market during the summer, and the variety gives us lots of flavors of syrup that we use in all kinds of drinks and dishes. One of our favorites we grow in our own garden, basil, a great and versatile herb that is a favorite in food and we love it in drinks.

Basil Simple Syrup
Fresh basil has a subtle peppery flavor. The taste can be slightly sweet and aromatic. Heat removes the flavor and if cooked for too long can result in bitterness.
We love to add basil syrup to a number of cocktails like our Peach and Basil Bourbon Shrub Cocktail and our Peach and Basil Moscow Mule. Here is our basil simple syrup recipe for you, give it a try and let us know what you think!
We are lucky enough to have our own little herb garden (we call it the cocktail garden!) in our backyard where we grow a whole bunch of fresh herbs that we use in cooking and drink making. One of the easiest herbs to grow is basil, and it does really well in a pot, too. This makes it perfect for use in the kitchen as you can keep a small pot handy!
How to Make Basil Syrup
To make a homemade syrup at home is simple. Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan. Stir and put on medium high heat.
Bring to almost boiling, take off heat. Add in basil leaves, let steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain out leaves and store in mason jar. Can be kept in fridge up to 2 weeks. Super simple and so fresh!
Can Simple Syrups go bad?
They can get moldy if they sit too long. We encourage you to store it in the fridge but for no more than one to two weeks. We actually have a whole shelf of simple syrups in our fridge at any given time! They are great stored in mason jars and add a drop or 2 of vodka and they stay better longer. - Great in cocktails, mocktails and lemonades. Super refreshing and herbal!
- Popsicles are great for this – with fruit! And with our chianti & blueberry ones!
- Use it in granita or sorbet to keep cool in the summer
- Drizzle a little on fresh fruit or ice cream

- 10-12 basil leaves
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
