A Rum Punch Cocktail recipe perfect for summer, with rum, vodka, juices and topped with lemon soda. Great for entertaining, as it’s easy and customizable. You can make it early and serve as a big batch cocktail.

This is a sunny tropical drink you can make with delicious rum! We used pineapple rum in this, but you can use coconut if that’s what you prefer, it’s not a set recipe, just a guideline.

We’re doing the staycation thing this summer, because we didn’t feel safe to travel.  But, that doesn’t mean we can’t feel like we are in the Caribbean.

This is also the normal time of year when I start to realize that our summer is nearly over. But, ironically that’s when I get really into the whole “staycation” idea (which really isn’t a choice this year!). I think about stringing up some lights on our patio (current project!), using our new fire pit, playing some beach music, and of course, mixing up this amazing tropical cocktail.

What’s In a Rum Punch Cocktail?

A typical rum punch cocktail recipe usually consists of rum (white rum, dark, or coconut), lots of fruit juice like pineapple, orange juice, lemon or lime juice. That’s the base idea. Then you can add in sweetener, some fizzy liquid or other ingredients, too!

Some of those ingredients can be easily swapped out and the amounts do vary from cocktail to cocktail. But, those ingredients are usually the basics of a rum punch.

Can I make this coconut rum punch ahead of time?

Yes! Big batch cocktails are our jam for big parties or events. Even if you are having a social distanced party, it’s so easy to do! And then you aren’t standing there making cocktails for people all night, you want to enjoy the event too! Like our easy to make Mai Tai!

Usually rum cocktails like this are even better after they have chilled for a few hours or overnight. Since this cocktail gets topped off with lemon soda, you will want to wait to add that right before serving.

Mix up the pineapple or coconut rum, vodka (or more rum) grapefruit juice, pineapple juice and spiced simple syrup and chill for a few hours ahead of time. Before serving, give it a stir, then pour into glasses and top with lemon soda! (Or you can add it into a pitcher or punch bowl too, but we do it individually!)

What if I don’t want to use Coconut Rum?

You don’t have to. But, feel free to use whatever rum you want. We do encourage you to try either flavored rum like coconut or pineapple, or a light rum – white or lightly aged. Don’t go too dark or the cocktail gets heavy.

How Can I Make This Rum Punch Cocktail for a Party?

This recipe as written is for 2 drinks, but this drink is perfect to share with friends! Here’s how to make it bigger for a party –

  • Know how many people are coming and adjust the servings — example:  if you’re having 8 people, multiply everything by 4.
  • Pitcher or Punch Bowl — add rum, vodka, simple syrup, and juices.  Stir and chill until the party.
  • Pour into ice-filled glasses (Clear ice for the win!) — Then pour from a pitcher or dip out from a punch bowl.
  • Top it — Top off your glasses with a bit of lemon soda.
