While all the craze on the days leading up to Cinco de Mayo was about margaritas, we were drinking another great Mexican cocktail the Paloma. We needed a good drink for the weekend festivities and since there was a lot of celebrating Cinco de Mayo going on, we decided that we would be sipping on a Paloma for sure! Already a great summer sipper, we mixed it up bit with some spring strawberries to make a great Strawberry Paloma!

While most people think that the margarita is the favorite drink of Mexico, in reality you are far more likely to find Mexicans drinking the Paloma! The Paloma is a refreshing highball sipper full of tequila, grapefruit soda, a splash of fresh lime juice all on top of crushed ice, a perfect sipper for summer. Crisp and full of effervescent citrus and blanco tequila, the paloma is at home on the beach as it is in a bar and is a great way to enjoy a cool drink on a hot day!

The last few summers, the paloma has been our go to drink for days in the pool as it is really easy to make, plus it is a great starting point for mixing variations! The simplicity of the paloma not only makes it great, but it makes it easy to add in some other flavors to create a delicious variation on the base drink. In this case, we wanted to have a drink that would bring the feeling of Spring while adding in a flavor that would work well with the grapefruit soda.

We had a bunch of delicious spring strawberries left over from some of our previous drinks (Strawberry Rhubarb Daiquiri Float anyone?) so we couldn’t let them go to waste, so we made up a batch of strawberry syrup. Strawberry is a really great spring and summer flavor and one that works really well with the crisp citrus bite from grapefruit. Our strawberry syrup added just a hint of berry fresh sweetness that balances out the tartness of the lime while giving just a hint of pink to the drink!

Give the Strawberry Paloma a try and see why it might just make you forget the margarita next time you need a tequila drink! Cheers!

  1. I’d never heard of a paloma until last week! But it looks amazing and refreshing– for some reason the weather has decided to turn frigid and rainy the last couple days, but as soon as it gets hot and sunny again- this would be perfection!!!

  2. Oh my goodness! These look so yummy & refreshing. They would be a perfect addition to a girls night or even a BBQ with friends ❤️

  3. Love the color of this drink. It’s so pretty and pink. 🙂 Sounds like a fun cocktail to try. I’ve never had a paloma, so I’m interested.

  4. I love the addition of the soda to the tequila….bubbly tequila is now on the top of my list for things to try. Looks like I know what cocktail we’ll be having at out Memorial Day BBQ!!

  5. I can’t believe I’ve never had a Paloma! Love the pairing of the strawberry syrup with the grapefruit soda. They look and sound so refreshing and such a great alternative to margaritas! These will definitely be making an appearance at my cookouts this summer!
