Orange Punch – Irn Bru Cocktail

An Irn Bru Cocktail makes for a great orange drink, light and rich in orange flavors and can be enjoyed all year long!

We got the inspiration for this Irn Bru cocktail from a cocktail that we had at Killiecrankie House in Scotland. This cocktail rendition is the closest we can get to what we sipped at the bar before dinner. Try some other orange cocktails like an Orange Moscow Mule, or our Earl of Orange.

We wanted to stick with an orange theme for this drink, and highlighted a Scottish Gin as well. Couldn’t just drink whisky, could we? So, we wanted a Marmalade Gin, some great brands are Slingsby, Aber Falls, or Chase Seville. But, these can be hard to find near you. And it’s a key ingredient. Tips below.

Irn Bru Soda

Jay and I had honestly never had Irn Bru, a classic Scottish soda until our first Scotland trip. It’s a bright orange color and makes for a striking addition to any drink. It’s really unknown what the flavor is, but people speculate it may be currant or orange, maybe a combination? But, whatever it is, it’s delicious!

Irn Bru is Scotland’s other national drink (other than whiskey), kind of like Coca-Cola is in the US. And, it’s a closely guarded secret flavor for this carbonated soft drink, we knew we needed a Scottish twist to the recipe. Irn Bru is also known as a “hangover cure” so we wanted orange flavors to come through, think breakfast!

Tips & Tricks

  • Irn Bru – obviously if you cannot get your hands on Irn Bru in your area, feel free to use regular orange soda. Fanta or Sunkist would work best.
  • Marmalade Gin – again, if you cannot get Marmalade Gin close to you, make your own! Add in 1 Tablespoon marmalade into 4 ounces gin, Scottish gin preferably, which is what we did. Let it infuse for 36-48 hours and then strain. Some great Scottish gins are: The Botanist, The Sassanach, Caorunn, or the Isle of Harris.
  • Glassware – a tall highball filled with ice is best for this drink.
  • Garnish – orange slice is a perfect choice. But, an orange wedge or lemon slice work, too!
