Orange Moscow Mule – A Vodka Cocktail

Last Updated on August 14, 2024 by Leah Hall

Moscow Mule variations are always a good choice of cocktail! We use some fresh orange juice to add a sunny brightness to this Orange Moscow Mule.

Oranges are available year round, so an Orange Moscow Mule makes this this easiest cocktail to have all year long! We love citrus in cocktails, it adds so much flavor and acid to cocktails, and of course, fresh juice is the best! Try it in our Citrus Fizz, too!

History of the Moscow Mule

A usual Moscow Mule is only 3 ingredients. Just like the orange version, but no orange juice. Easy and tasty.

The Moscow Mule is rumored to have been born in Manhattan, at the Chatham Hotel. In 1941 Jack Morgan’s Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer was coming to New York. He and two friends were in the bar, and as it is told they were drinking, eating hors d’oeuvres, and were wondering how Jacks’ ginger beer would go with one of their vodkas and some lemon juice. They ordered ice, lemons were procured and the liked the concoction. It’s said 4-5 days later it was named the Moscow Mule!

In 2007 though, a new version of this story was told. Wes Price, Morgan’s head bartender made it, out of necessity to clear the bar’s cellar, which was packed with unused inventory, including vodka and ginger beer.

Why does a Moscow Mule need a Copper Cup?

A copper cup is a great insulator which keeps the drink super cold.  While not completely necessary, it also looks really cool and makes it obvious which drink you are drinking.

It is said that Jack Morgan is the one who popularized the mug, along with Smirnoff vodka, while touring around the US. He asked bartenders to pose with a specialty copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff. The copper mug stuck around.

Use a fine mesh strainer to get the pulp out of the orange juice for this cocktail. Pour the strained juice, vodka, and lime juice into a copper mug filled with crushed ice. Top with ginger beer and let the bubbles do the mixing.

Garnish with candied ginger and an orange wedge if you want!

Thanks for the recipe! I think the copper mug really makes the drink. I found them on Amazon relatively cheap.
