Come along with us on our 24 hours visiting as a Kansas City vacation on our Foodie Getaway!
Whenever we travel and no matter the destination, we always pack one thing, our appetite! We love traveling to places just to discover new places to eat or drink, and usually our plans revolve about what restaurant, winery, brewery or cocktail bar we can visit! We recently took a quick trip just down the road to Kansas City, Missouri where we found all kinds of tasty eats and delicious drinks!

Things To Do in Kansas City:
With 24 hours you don’t have a ton of time, but here are some suggestions of places to visit (not for food necessarily), but to see all the things KC has to offer! We loved the National World War I Museum and Memorial, which was informative, and if you climb to the top of the tower, you get fantastic views of the city!
There is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, with their over 34.000 pieces of art! The Crown Center is a great place to visit, with or without kids, but it they have the LEGOLAND Discovery Center and the SEA LIFE Aquarium, as well as the Hallmark Visitors Center.
When you wake up from a great night of sleep at the Hotel Phillips, and are needing food! Don’t forget that breakfast is the most important meal of the day! And I don’t know about you, but coffee is essential for any morning, especially on a foodie getaway! Kansas City has some amazing coffeehouses and breakfast spots! The Roasterie is one, plus they will give you a tour about their cupping, roasting and blending process! Or, how about the Filling Station or Thou Mayest? For breakfast for brunch might we suggest Blvd Tavern, The Farmhouse, or where we went on this trip, Genessee Royale (It has since been closed)!
Lunch and Afternoon:
If you aren’t too full from breakfast, here are some ideas for some midday snacks! Pigwich, with some amazing sandwiches and housemade potato chips! Another place to hit is the Kansas City River Market offers a whole bunch of great options (as they say “from flapjacks to sandwiches and every ethnic cuisine between!) and with a bunch of choices right in the market, there is something for any appetite on our foodie getaway!
If you are wanting to get a little day drinking on, we would suggest the free tour at Boulevard Brewing, or at J. Rieger Distillery (just note, they only do fall and winter tours, due to the lack of air conditioning).
If you need an afternoon pick me up like we did, and we went to Betty Rae’s Ice Cream. Betty Rae’s is one of those great little locally owned places where the passion of the owners is evident (in fact the owners met and fell in love over ice cream!). They even have boozy shakes if you want to keep the buzz going after your tours!
Dinner and Late Night:
For our Kansas City vacation, we knew it was a town typically known for its BBQ, and we certainly got plenty of BBQ flavor while at the KC Flavor Fest at Worlds of Fun, but if you want some BBQ, this is the town to be in! Be sure to check out Joe’s Kansas City BBQ (formally known as Oklahoma Joe’s) for some awesome KC BBQ!
We eschewed the BBQ that night since we had some during the day, and headed to SOT Social! SOT Social is a cool bar in the Crossroads District that serves some great small plates and awesome cocktails. We indulged in some fantastic charcuterie and cocktails before heading out to do a bar tour.
If you are looking for great cocktails, Kansas City has some wonderful choices! One of the hottest spots is Manifesto, which is a hidden speakeasy that is serving some perfectly crafted and inventive cocktails! We tried to get in, but sadly they were booked solid (sad trombone) but Manifesto will be on the top of our list for our next trip! (We would tell you how to get in, but figuring it out is half the fun and we aren’t going to spoil it for you!)
Other choices to stop at for some great cocktails are Julep and Tom’s Town Distilling. We ended up last at P.S. Speakeasy at Hotel Phillips, which was a great way to wrap up the night with some classic cocktails and some great house signature cocktails. We won’t tell you how to get in there either, we don’t want to spoil the surprise! Have fun on your own foodie getaway in Kansas City!
If you are going on a Kansas City vacation, we recommend renting a VRBO Rental Location to stay at!
