A childhood cereal version of a classic Brandy Milk Punch Recipe!

With two little boys in our house, we ALWAYS have cereal in the house. And usually its the super sugary kind! I had seen a cereal milk cocktail a while back and it’s always been in the back of my mind to make, so when we had some Captain Crunch in the house I knew what had to happen!

Captain Crunch Cereal

Captain Crunch cereal was always a childhood favorite of mine when I could get it! Then I came across this Lucky Charms Cereal Milk Cocktail from Natalie Jacob of Arsenic Lace, and she had done a post on A Beautiful Mess. I took my inspiration for that cocktail into this one!

Brandy Milk Punch

When we were researching cereal milk punches, we noticed it sounded like a twist on a Brandy Milk Punch cocktail, which is a classic cocktail based usually with brandy or bourbon. This recipe was apparently first recorded in William Sacheverell’s 1688 travelogue of the Scottish isle of Iona, however the first time it appears in a cookbook was in 1711.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Cereal Milk Cocktail?

  • For the Punch
    • Brown Sugar Simple Syrup
    • Vanilla or Almond Extract
    • Cereal Milk
    • Dark Rum
  • For the Cereal Milk
    • Salt
    • Brown Sugar
    • Whole Milk
    • Captain Crunch Cereal

Brandy Milk Punch was originally made for a crowd in a punch bowl, and they used curdled and strained cream through the use of alcohol or acid or heating (as was Ben Franklin’s favored method!) And if Ben Franklin (who was a real party animal in his own right!) liked this, we should too, right?! Queen Victoria also had a favorite milk punch too! If it’s good enough for royalty…..

Cereal Milk

So onto the modern twist of cereal milk! Using a twist of Milk Bar’s cereal milk recipe, we embraced the cereal milk craze created by Christina Tosi! Then we added dark rum, which is a twist from the classic, as it’s usually brandy or whiskey, but we tried all the liquor (oh darn, such a tough job!), and liked the flavor of the rum with the cereal milk!

Go with an aged dark rum, at least 4 years, as it is sweeter and more molasses-y, which with compliment the milk and the simple syrup. Speaking of the simple syrup, when adding it, err on the side of caution because if you add too much and it’s too sweet, you may not like your drink. You can always add more later!

We also used a bit of extracts to add flavors in this cocktail, the vanilla makes the milk punch recipe a little sweeter and more fragrant, and the almond a little more rich, so just decide which you like better!
