Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule – A Bourbon Cocktail

A twist on the classic, the flavors are fresh and clean in this blackberry and bourbon Kentucky Mule!


The Moscow Mule is one of those classic cocktails that is super refreshing, very tasty and easy to make. Originally concocted back in 1946 as a way to help market the struggling Smirnoff vodka and Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer brands, the iconic Copper Mug was the finishing touch that made the Moscow Mule a star on any cocktail bar’s menu.

Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule even helped bring about the popularity of vodka, which in 1946 was considered a horrible distilled product. The astute marketing and crisp refreshing flavor helped usher in the popularity of vodka cocktails in the US back in the 50’s and 60’s. When the craft cocktail movement became popular in the last few years, once again the catchy name and iconic copper mug helped popularize the cocktail movement.


As folks who like to dabble in cocktails, the Mule provides lots of flexibility as its ingredients and simple clean flavors lend themselves to lots of modification. We have a number of different spins on the classic Moscow Mule like our popular Caramel Apple Mule or our citrusy Fresh Squeezed Mule.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule?

  • Blackberries
  • Sage Simple Syrup
  • Bourbon
  • Lime Juice
  • Ginger Beer


One popular variation we like swaps out the traditional vodka for a whiskey. Adding in some fresh fruit flavors can change the drink even further, allowing us to tailor the drink based on what fruit is seasonal or a favorite of one of our guests.

For the Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule cocktail, we used some of the great blackberries we have been getting from our grocer and our homemade sage simple syrup that we made from sage grown in our back yard. We started by muddling sweet blackberries, adding a delicious fruitiness that works really well with the bourbon.


We added a bit of sage infused simple syrup, which adds a fresh hint of herbs and evergreen, which is a rather unique but delicious sweetness. A hit of fresh squeezed lime juice adds a balanced bit of sour that brings the drink to life. Topped with a good ginger beer it rounds out the Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule with a bit of bubbly brightness!

Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule

Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule - A Bourbon Cocktail

Prep Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 3 minutes

A twist on the classic Kentucky Mule, this adds sage and blackberries which play well with the bourbon.


  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 4 blackberries
  • .75 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 oz sage simple syrup
  • 4 ounces ginger beer


Muddle blackberries in the bottom of a copper mug.

Pour in sage syrup and lime juice.

Fill mug with ice.

Top with bourbon and ginger beer.

Stir to combine.
