Orange Moscow Mules and Moscow Mule vodka popsicles! An orange cocktail treat for all year long!

We are big fans of Moscow Mules, and with National Moscow Mule Day coming up on March 3rd, we figured what better way to celebrate than a Moscow Mule and and a Moscow Mule Popsicle as a bonus! Of course a holiday deserves something more than just a simple Moscow Mule, so we came up with our Sunrise over Moscow Mule, which is pretty much orange Moscow mules, because it uses fresh squeezed orange juice to add a bright citrus splash to wake up this classic cocktail!

Orange Juice Cocktail

Way back in 1941, vodka was virtually unknown here in the United States, as spirits such as whiskey and brandy were huge. Jim Martin, the president of the company which later would become Smirnoff, had a great vodka that needed a way to market itself to potential customers, so he partnered up with the founder of an iconic Hollywood restaurant that was popular with lots of celebrities like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Errol Flynn, who were regular fixtures at the bar. It was at this bar, the Moscow Mule was born.

An intriguing combination of vodka, ginger beer, simple syrup and lime juice, the Moscow Mule was known for its crisp, spicy bite from the ginger and a cool tart finish. Known as the “Drink with the Velvet Kick” the Moscow Mule gained popularity with the celebrities, and soon after Smirnoff vodka was soon the spirit of choice for folks all over the US.

The original Moscow Mule was served in a souvenir copper mug, which caught the customer’s eye and proved to be quite the effective marketing tool, as the Moscow mule is still served in copper mugs to this day!

What is the Difference from A Normal Moscow Mule?

We love the classic Moscow Mule, but we also enjoy adding our own little twists to the classics. For our Sunrise Over Moscow Mule, we wanted to add the naturally bright sweetness that fresh squeezed orange juice brings to a cocktail. We start our with the classic Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka, a triple distilled vodka that is filtered ten times to result in a smooth vodka with a note of spicy grain and hints of lemon, perfect for mixing in cocktails.

Next we add fresh squeeze lime and orange juice, the two citrus flavors a sweet tart combination that teases the tongue. Topping the drink with a good spicy ginger beer adds a crisp fizzy finish to the Moscow Mule.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Orange Moscow Mules?

  • For the Sunrise Moscow Mules
    • Vodka
    • Orange Juice
    • Lime Juice
    • Ginger Beer
  • For the Sunrise Popsicles
    • Vodka
    • Simple Syrup
    • Orange Juice
    • Ginger Beer

Accompanying the Sunrise Over Moscow are a popsicle version of the Sunrise Over Moscow Mule. For the popsicles we wanted to still have vodka, but since alcohol doesn’t freeze at temperatures household freezers can reach, we have to dial the amount of vodka down so the mixture will freeze.

We also added in a little Simple Syrup to sweeten up the mix and make the Sunrise Over Moscow Popsicles sweeter and more popsicle like!

Don't really have alcohol, but these popsicles sound like a great adult treat. Come summer, they would be absolutely brilliant. Although I am sure they can easily be enjoyed throughout the year. Brilliant!
