The Laphroaig Distillery Tour is not to be missed! Go for the whisky and the great whisky history on the Isle of Islay, Scotland.
When on the Isle of Islay surrounded by sea air and peat smoke the Laphroaig Distillery tour should be at the top of your list to visit. For us, the adventure began with the ferry crossing into Port Ellen, the closest village to the distillery and a charming intro to Islay. From there, it’s a short drive along the coastline to Laphroaig with lovely views across the water.

We’ve been on a lot of distillery tours, but Islay whisky tours feel extra special because of the landscape. Here, the wind has the scent of peat bogs that are the island, which then helps become the unique flavor Laphroaig whisky is so famous for. And the peat smoke was pumping out of the buildings as we walked up to the distillery. It smelled amazing!

Check out the whisky regions of Scotland, and all about our trip to Islay and staying at Glenegedale House. Check out the other distilleries Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Ardnahoe, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, and Port Ellen.

Laphroaig Distillery Tour
That unmistakable Islay character is what makes Laphroaig the first scotch many people fall in love with (or shock their palate!) But, nothing compares to tasting it right where it’s made.

Our experience tour began by checking in at the shop (there is also an attached bar) and getting our glass on a lanyard before heading into the heart of production. There were whisky tastings during the tour.

One of the things that sets this distillery apart is that it has its own malting floor. This is something few distilleries still do, as they send it out for processing. We got to see barley spread across the floors and learned how Laphroaig turns it as it germinates.

The peat smoke used to dry the malt is from local peat bogs, and gives Laphroaig its famous smoke and seaweed scent and flavor. Jay even got the chance to throw a brick of peat into the fire.

Our guide shared stories of the history of owners and distillers who helped shape the brand. It’s fascinating to hear history in the rooms where whisky has been made for generations.

The wash stills were bubbling away, filling the air with a sweet aroma. We learned how the spirit matures in a variety of casks, including the fan favorite quarter cask, which adds more depth and intensity.

Laphroaig Whisky Tasting
Of course, every good whisky tour ends with a whisky tasting. We sampled whiskies that showcased just how wide the Laphroaig flavor spectrum is. These went from lighter expressions to cask strength bottles that pack a peppery punch. We were given the option of which ones we wanted to try.

Even if you’re already familiar with Laphroaig whisky, having it at the source is amazing. The sea air and the landscape feels connected to every sip. And if you think you don’t like smoky whisky, this tour may just convert you! There’s something magical about learning where the flavors come from and meeting the people who keep traditions alive.

For fans of Islay whisky tours, the Laphroaig Distillery tour is a must do. It was scenic, hands-on, and full of good whisky. Whether Laphroaig was your first scotch or you’re still discovering smoky single malt, this is an experience tour that stays with you long after you’ve headed back on the ferry to the mainland.
