Salted Bourbon Butterscotch White Russian – A Vodka Cocktail

Last Updated on December 11, 2019 by The 'Noms.

So this Butterscotch White Russian cocktail is really great, a twist on the classic, but with an extra salty sweet treat!

When we started playing around with fall flavors, butterscotch was not at the top of our list. Instead we were going for lots of apple cider, spice and maple. But when we came up with our Salted Bourbon Butterscotch Sauce, we knew we would have to come up with a cocktail to use it in! The sauce is a great twist on regular caramel, although a caramel white Russian would be lovely as well!

Butterscotch White Russian

We were kicking around a couple of ideas on a recent weekend and happened to be watching TV while doing it when one of those classic weekend movies came up on our screen, The Big Lebowski. Almost simultaneously, we both said “White Russians!” We knew we had a cocktail we would have to make.

The result? The Salted Bourbon Butterscotch White Russian!

What is a White Russian?

In the movie, the White Russian is said to be the perfect delivery vehicle for all of man’s culinary vices, fat, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. A cocktail made with vodka, coffee liqueur and cream, the White Russian is actually a spin off the Black Russian cocktail. The Black Russian which was invented during the Russian vodka crazy of the 1950s.

A splash of heavy cream made the Black Russian into a White Russian and makes the White Russian a real smooth rich cocktail.

If You are Looking for More Vodka Cocktails, Try These!

One of the big components of the White Russian is the coffee liqueur which brings a big flavor of coffee to the cocktail. We figured that lots of folks like salted caramel lattes, so why not a cocktail that emulates the flavors found in a caramel latte? We subbed in a caramel infused vodka (but feel free to use a caramel flavored vodka) for the plain vodka. Then started the drink out with a light hint of caramel that worked well with the coffee flavors of the coffee liqueur.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Salted Butterscotch White Russian?

  • Half and Half
  • Mocha Kahlua
  • Caramel Vodka
  • Salted Bourbon Butterscotch Sauce
  • Nutmeg

We decided that the caramel vodka was to subtle, and if we were going to make a cocktail with a big bold flavor, we should use our delicious Salted Bourbon Butterscotch sauce. The Butterscotch Sauce brings a rich deep dark caramel flavor to the Salted Bourbon Butterscotch White Russian. The hints of bourbon also added a well rounded complexity that worked really well in this cocktail.

The extra sweetness from the butterscotch sauce makes the Salted Bourbon Butterscotch White Russian a little sweet, but still really satisfying to sip on, too.
