For Goodness Saké – A Saké and Ginger Cocktail

A pairing of sake and pickled ginger in this drink! A great sake cocktail!

One of our go to date night meals is heading out for sushi and drinks at one of our favorite local sushi places, Blue Sushi. Any good sushi meal should always include drinks, and one drink that goes hand in hand with sushi is sake. Accompanying any sushi and sake meal is usually a rose of pickled ginger, slightly sweet and spicy and definitely tangy.

Sake Cocktail

We were enjoying a small cup of sake and noticed that the flavors of the sake and the ginger really worked together. It was one of those moments where the inspiration for a new cocktail strikes and we started thinking about how we could meld the flavors together.

In summer, tangy cocktails are especially popular as they can be a great way to beat the heat and be very refreshing. The For Goodness Saké fits the tangy bill, combining the pickled ginger juice with a nice premium Junmai sake. The pickled ginger juice is surprisingly sweet and tangy, as the process for pickling ginger uses sugar and vinegar, yet still has a nice gingery bite.

What Ingredients are Needed for the For Goodness Sake?

  • Sake
  • Pickled Ginger Juice
  • Lime Juice
  • Simple Syrup

The sake has a smooth slightly sweet flavor, with hints of floral and fruit while still remaining crisp. Fresh squeezed lime juice adds a bright citrus flavor that brings out the tang of the pickled ginger and the fruit of the sake. We did add a dash of simple syrup to help with the bite of the ginger, and it plays well together!

We added a slash of Simple Syrup to help balance the sour, which made the drink a very refreshing combination of sweet and tart. A garnish of pickled ginger adds a beautiful visual element as well as giving the drink an extra hit of ginger (plus when you finish the cocktail, you have a snack!)

Is Sake Like Wine?

It is a beverage fermented from rice. So in that way it is more like beer, but not carbonated. The flavor of sake is more like a wine.

Can Sake Go Bad?

Sake is not meant for aging like wine. It is meant to be consumed fresh, within a year or two of buying it.

Cheers!
