This Blueberry Old Fashioned is a twist on a Blueberry Pie, but in cocktail form!
We love blueberries in cocktails! Especially with whiskey, these berries are flavorful and a lovely addition to any drink. Try them in a Blueberry Martini, Blueberry Smash, Blueberry Lemonade or a Blueberry Cucumber Gimlet!

This blueberry old fashioned was inspired by fresh blueberry pie. So, we wanted to have the flavors of a fresh summer pie including brown sugar and/or pecans or almonds in the crust. So, inspired by this we made a brown sugar simple syrup. Then we crushed the fresh blueberries, added in toasted pecans and Angostura bitters, and used a rye whiskey for a bit of spice!
How to Make a Blueberry Old Fashioned
Start off with the brown sugar simple syrup and add the berries in a mixing glass. Muddle berries with the syrup, add in lemon juice, aromatic bitters, toasted pecan bitters, and then rye whiskey with ice.
Stir to chill, and double strain with a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh sieve. Put this drink in a rocks glass with a large cube of ice. Garnish as desired.
Tips & Tricks
- Garnish – there are some great options for garnishes in this Blueberry Old Fashioned! Try a bunch of fresh blueberries on a cocktail pick, an orange peel or lemon peel, or cinnamon sticks!
- Glassware – an Old Fashioned should be served in a rocks glass with a large ice cube.
- Bitters – if you can’t find the Toasted Pecan Bitters, try a dash or two of almond bitters or clove bitters, or mix the 2. Otherwise, good old Angostura bitters will work!
