A coffee and Irish whiskey cocktail. How can you go wrong with this Toasted Cream Irish Coffee? It’s a great Irish Coffee variation that is a fun twist on the classic coffee cocktail.

We are both big fans of coffee and you would be hard pressed to find a morning where we don’t have a big mug of coffee in hand. Coffee even finds a way into our after dinner routine pretty regularly when we finish up our dessert or cheese plate. Especially after on special occasions like holidays (St. Patrick’s Day anyone?) or celebrations.

One way we like to spice up those special coffees is to make the classic Irish Coffee, a traditional coffee cocktail! Of course we didn’t just stop at the traditional Irish Coffee, we took it to a new level with our Toasted Cream Irish Coffee!

There are a lot of Irish coffee variations that all sound amazing! Frozen Irish Coffee, a Gaelic coffee with Scotch whiskey, cold Irish coffee with cold brew coffee, Irish Cream coffee with Irish whiskey and Irish Cream liqueur. These all come to personal preference, and if you want a hot or cold cocktail.

Some other coffee cocktails are our Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Blizzard, Orange Espresso Martini, and Eggnog White Russian.

The Irish Coffee is a simple cocktail, with just four ingredients, hot coffee, sugar, cream and Irish whiskey. This makes a warm, slightly sweet cocktail that is perfect for a brunch or as a warming drink on a cold winter day. Basic history of it comes from the early 1940s, a chilly night and a group of American passengers and Joe Sheridan. It came to the US because of a San Francisco newspaper writer. So make sure to read all about the fascinating history!

How to Make an Toasted Cream Irish Whiskey Coffee

When making the first Irish coffee they started with hot coffee poured into a mug, then Irish Whiskey is poured into the coffee. Brown sugar is added into the coffee and whiskey and stirred until fully dissolved then comes the magic… floating the cream!

Lightly whipped fresh cream is poured slowly over the back of a spoon which helps gently layer it on top of the coffee and whiskey! Boom, you have traditional Irish Coffee!

In making this Toasted Cream Irish Whiskey Coffee, the basic ingredients are the same as the classic. Brown sugar, Irish whiskey and coffee. But, we added a little granulated sugar, instead of all brown sugar, because the toastiness from the toasted cream changes the flavor.

Then, comes the toasted cream. This ingredient does need some planning and time. First, you just have to have time to toast the cream. Yes, I said toast the cream. Here is a great article from Serious Eats all about toasted cream and how to go about making it. We cannot take credit for this fantastic recipe.

Toasted Cream gives a butterscotch, caramel and browned butter flavor and is tasty added to a perfect Irish Coffee recipe!

What Ingredients are Needed for the Toasted Cream Irish Whiskey Coffee?

  • Sugar – regular granulated sugar is great for this.
  • Brown Sugar – you can use regular brown sugar or dark brown sugar, whatever you have.
  • Coffee – hot, strong brewed coffee is ideal for this classic recipe. A dark roast coffee is a great option because of the bold flavor.
  • Irish Whiskey – You can use any brand you like, but some well known favorite Irish Whiskeys are Jameson whiskey or Bushmills
  • Toasted Cream – again, the recipe for the toasted cream gives you all the info you need. Then, you just need to whip the heavy cream until it has soft peaks. This whipped cream will be easily added to the coffee drink over the back of a spoon to make a creamy drink. We did add just a hint of brown sugar to the toasted cream to help it whip up (just lightly to give it a little structure).

Toasted cream cocktails (like this amazing Chai Toasted Cream White Russian) are a favorite around here ever since we discovered a way to make toasted cream in our Instant Pot!

More Whiskey Cocktails

A good Irish whiskey typically is smooth and slightly sweet, with hints of toasted grain, honey, and vanilla. All of these flavors go really well with those butterscotch and caramel of toasted cream, all of which make this one heck of a good pair!

Tips & Tricks

  • Sweetener – like we said, we used granulated sugar and brown sugar, but if you want an easy of mixing and not having to wait, you can use simple syrup. We have a homemade simple syrup recipe, and you can sub in some brown sugar as well to make it 1/2 and 1/2. You can also adjust the amount of sugar either way to your liking, or even add more for additional sweetness.
  • Glassware – obviously the best Irish Coffee recipes are served in a glass mug. If you have special Irish coffee mugs, great! But, if not, any mug will do! If you want the hot drink of coffee to stay warmer on a cold night, make sure to use a prewarmed mug before making the drink by adding hot water to the mug to heat it up. Then dump the water before making the cocktail. We even have some fun Irish Coffee goblets!
  • Garnish – We used Lucky Charms marshmallows for ours. But, a cinnamon stick, caramel sauce, a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg on top all with the cream float on top of the coffee.
  • Non-Alcoholic Version – you can easily make this recipe non-alcoholic, you can easily leave out the shot of whiskey and sip the combination of strong coffee with the toasted cream!

Toasted Cream Irish Coffee - An Irish Whiskey Cocktail

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

A perfect alternative to green beer on St. Patrick's Day, this Irish Coffee will warm you up, as well as our touch of toasted cream makes it wonderfully decadent.

Ingredients

Toasted Cream Irish Coffee

Instructions

Preheat your mug with hot water, then fill with coffee. Fill the mug 3/4 full with the coffee.

Add the sugars and stir until fully dissolved.

Add whiskey and stir to incorporate.

If using lightly whipped cream, pour it slowly over a warm spoon onto the coffee, being careful not to break the coffee's surface. This takes some practice. An easier way is to whip the cream a bit more and dollop it gently on top.

Drink while hot.

Cheers!
