The Irish Mule Cocktail is a refreshing drink easily made with ginger beer, lime juice and Irish whiskey. You can enjoy this on St. Patrick’s Day or all year long!

There are a lot of drinks you can sip on Saint Patrick’s Day. Most might opt for a Guinness, or even a green beer. But, we prefer a cocktail made with Irish whiskey! This could be an Irish Old Fashioned, Irish Coffee, Nutty Irishman, Irish Buck, or this easy Irish Mule.

The Irish Mule recipe is just a variation on the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail, but it replaces vodka with Irish whiskey. This easy cocktail is also known as the Dublin Mule. There are other mule variations like a Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule with Kentucky whiskey, a Smoked Salt Grapefruit London Mule with gin, Campfire mule with Amaretto, and more.

Ingredients Needed for an Irish Mule

Just 3 simple ingredients are needed for this refreshing twist on the classic Moscow Mule cocktail:

  • Irish Whiskey – To make this a proper Irish Mule, you need to use good old Irish whiskey. Irish whiskey is different from American whiskey because it can be made with barley. American whiskey is made with corn, rye or wheat. Jameson Irish whiskey is probably the most popular brand, but there are many others like Tullamore Dew, Bushmills and Teeling.
  • Lime Juice – as always, freshly squeezed lime juice is best.
  • Ginger beer – we love Fever Tree brand, but use whatever favorite brand spicy ginger beer you like. For a less spicy ginger flavored ginger beer use Bundaberg. Don’t use ginger ale!

How to Make an Irish Mule

A classic cocktail, the Moscow Mule was originally made in a copper mug. This is because copper is good at sustaining temperature, and when an ice cold cocktail is made inside, the copper actually takes on that temperature and keeps the refreshing cocktail frosty longer!

However, we chose not to serve this Jameson Mule in a copper cup. On a nice hot summer day, yes. But, we are making this Irish Mule in March, we just had snow. So, we just used a rocks glass. And this recipe is easy because no cocktail shaker is required.

First, fill the glass most of the way full with crushed ice. You need plenty of ice to keep this Irish whiskey mule chilled.

Then, add smooth Irish whiskey and fresh lime juice to the mug. Top this delicious Irish twist off with a bit of spice from the ginger beer and give it a stir with a bar spoon. Garnish this great drink as you like.

Tips & Tricks

  • Mint – There is some talk of adding mint to an Irish Mule. We have seen a number of recipes with muddled mint. Feel free to do this if you like, but we skipped it. Just muddle the mint gently in the bottom of the glass with a muddler and don’t bruise or mash the mint, just press down lightly.
  • Sweetener – if you want your Irish Mule to be a little sweeter, feel free to add some simple syrup. If you want it less spirit forward, add some more ginger beer. If you want it more acidic, add some more lime juice. Make it to your taste.
  • Garnish – There are some great and easy choices for garnishes. A lime wedge or lime wheel. Crystalized ginger on a cocktail pick, or sprig of mint leaves.
