What Ingredients are Needed for a Grapefruit Margarita?

In a classic margarita you will find simple ingredients, and no exception in this beautiful grapefruit margarita with just 5 easy ingredients. Here’s what you need to make it:

  • Tequila – we use tequila blanco most of the time, and this is no exception. But, if there is another tequila you prefer, you can use that instead of the blanco tequila.
  • Simple Syrup – we do sweeten this margarita with a little simple syrup, it just depends how sweet and sour your grapefruit juice is.
  • Triple Sec – the citrus flavor of the orange liqueur is a margarita staple. You can use triple sec, Grand Marnier, or Cointreau.
  • Grapefruit Juice – again, fresh squeezed citrus juice is the best way to add flavor to simple cocktails. Fresh grapefruit juice adds a bright and tart flavor. You can use bottled store-bought grapefruit juice, but it is a little “flatter” than fresh squeezed. You can pick from ruby red grapefruit or pink grapefruits.
  • Lime Juice – again, fresh squeezed lime juice is the best lime flavor. Use one of our vintage citrus reamers!
  • Salt – we love to rim a margarita with salt. But, we have some alternatives below if you aren’t a big salt lover or want the salty flavors.

To start, rim a glass with salt. Use a wedge of lime or grapefruit and run it around the rim of your glasses, then dip the glass in salt to make the salted rim. Fill the glass with ice, and set the glass aside.

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake and strain the fresh grapefruit margarita into the glass.

Tips & Tricks

  • Sweetener – we just used regular simple syrup in this case, but if you want to switch it up, we have some other suggestions. Try a honey simple syrup or agave syrup.
  • Rim – when rimming your cocktail glass, feel free to use just sea salt or kosher salt, salt and sugar mixed together, or add in some tajin for spice!
  • Glassware – feel free to use classic margarita glasses, a rocks glass or highball glass for this recipe. Really a margarita can be served in any glassware!
  • Garnish – feel free to garnish with anything here – grapefruit slices, dried grapefruit wheels, lime wedge, grapefruit wedge, mint sprig, even a cucumber or 2.
  • For a Crowd – this is an easy recipe to make for a large group or for parties. This is a crowd pleaser, and you can feel free to double, triple or even quadruple it in a large pitcher. Perfect for a Cinco de Mayo party or summer barbeque with warm weather! It can be mixed up a few hours before and placed in the fridge to stay cool before serving. When serving, divide between ice filled and salt rimmed glasses and garnish.
  • Mocktail – This can be made as a mocktail by simply leaving out the tequila and triple sec. Add some orange juice in place of the triple sec, and then sparkling lemon soda or tonic to replace the tequila. Rim the glass as you would the cocktail.
  • Spicy – feel free to make this cocktail spicy grapefruit margaritas by using spicy triple sec or spicy tequila instead of the normal triple sec or tequila. Or, add in some sliced jalapenos and muddle them before shaking the cocktail.
  • Sparkling – you can make this a sparkling margarita if you wish. Add some club soda or soda water, lemon soda or lemon-lime soda after pouring the other ingredients into the glass. This is a tasty twist on classic margaritas, too!
