Want some homemade ice cream on your next trip to Omaha? We have you covered!

Mrs. Nom and the junior Nomers stopped by Ted and Wally’s Ice Cream Parlor as a special treat after an afternoon of family activities downtown.  Ted and Wally’s is an Omaha fixture tucked away in the Old Market, featuring premium homemade style ice cream churned in antique (and salt encrusted) ice cream freezers sitting out front of the counter.

The main room is small and quaint with vintage decor and tables, antique ice cream counter and artwork from local Omaha artists covering the wall, creating a cafe or coffeehouse kind of vibe.

Mrs. Nom ordered a double dip of Lemon Custard in a waffle cone, the Junior Nomers stuck with chocolate, and I grabbed a double dip of Amaretto Cherry Coffee Cake in a waffle cone.   The ice cream is the main attraction, wonderfully rich and creamy, exhibits the unique quality slightly grainy quality of homemade ice cream made with rock salt.

The care used in the selection of the ingredients is evident, rich multi-layered flavors that get better when combined with the perfectly crisp and sweet waffle cone.  The lemon custard, a deep yellow, was tangy and tart with a richness that was complimented by the sweetness of the waffle cone.

My Amaretto Cherry Coffee Cake cone, the color of a maraschino cherry, had bits of crumbled coffee cake and amaretto soaked cherry chunks mixed into the cream, providing a nice textural contrast between the smooth high butter fat cream and the crunchy crumbles.  The kids liked the rich chocolate, with has notes of dark cocoa providing a satisfying depth to the sweet chocolate.

Where to have ice cream in Omaha?

Ted and Wally’s features some of the usual suspects like chocolate and vanilla, but the real charm is the ever changing selection of specialty flavors on the menu.  All these specialty flavors are hand crafted by the staff at Ted and Wally’s and feature flavors like Amaretto Cherry Coffee Cake, Peach Caramel Pecan Pie, Green Tea with Honey or White Chocolate Pistachio.

The menu changes daily, and typically features 10-12 flavors, and can be found on hand written chalkboards behind the ice cream counter.   You also can check the daily flavors as they are posted on Ted and Wally’s Twitter account @tedandwallys, or on their webpage.

Sorry no pictures, but trying to wrangle the little Nomers and keep them from smearing ice cream all over their dress clothes created somewhat of a crazy environment!

If you are coming to Omaha, we recommend renting a VRBO Location!

I recently asked about a black walnut icecream that they had made a few years back (on their FB page) and within the day, they'd offered to make a custom batch for me and I had a gallon on order! I'll do that every fall from now on! What wonderful folk!
