This Blueberry Smash cocktail is full of flavor and the a perfect blueberry cocktail for a roaring 20’s event like the one we made this for!

This blueberry cocktail was a no brainer for us to make. We wanted a boozy tipple for a speakeasy party, and we knew we wanted some absinthe used in it as well. Plus, blueberries and lemons were on sale, so this one was born!

We based this recipe off of a classic cocktail known as the Choker.

Choker Cocktail

For 6
4 Glasses Whisky
2 Glasses Absinthe
1 Dash Absinthe Bitters

This Cocktail is to be very thoroughly shaken and no sweetening in any form should be added. This cocktail comes from the Savoy Cocktail Book by Henry Craddock, which was published in 1930 and has over 750 classic cocktails that a lot of today’s cocktails are based off of. We love to read it just to get ideas, which sparked this Blueberry Smash.

So, we were inspired by this Choker cocktail recipe, but threw the original out the window for this one!

Smash Cocktail

We basically made a classy smash cocktail. But, didn’t add an herb, we used absinthe instead. This cocktail really is an amalgamation of a lot of things! But, it’s tasty!

The Smash is in a family of cocktails that generally include:

alcohol
sweetener
herb
seasonal fruit
ice

Don’t worry about what appears to be a lot of ingredients, because smashes are easy to make, especially for the beginning cocktail maker. Since the definition of the Smash drink is very loose, you really can’t do anything wrong.

For example, ice can be in the drink or strained, the seasonal fruit can be muddled or simply be a garnish. You can pretty much do anything you want. And we like that feature!

What Ingredients are Needed for the Blueberry Cocktail?

Blueberries
Lemon Simple Syrup
Bourbon
Bitters
Absinthe

It’s a great way to class up your favorite bourbon and is a refreshing choice for everyday drinking, or for a speakeasy event as we made this one for!

Especially with the touch of absinthe, this is a very pre-prohibition cocktail for sure!

How to Make the Blueberry Smash

Using a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon, smash the berries in a shaker. Add the lemon simple syrup and bitters. Top with bourbon and ice.

Shake vigorously to combine!

Spray glass with a mist of absinthe. Strain cocktail into glass. Top with more berries if desired.

Absinthe Rinse vs Misting

This is a technique that is entirely subject to the maker of the cocktail. The difference is a rinse imparts a small concentration of flavor in the glass, and a spray provides an aromatic quality to enhance the nose of a drink. In this cocktail we did a spray.

We wanted the nose to really stand out, which it does with it’s black licorice notes. But, it also adds a bit of flavor to the cocktail. We also love using our Mr Misto, which makes it so easy to do a spray!

This blueberry cocktail is easy to make and a tasty choice! Make this blueberry, lemon, bourbon and absinthe Blueberry Smash cocktail.

Ingredients

5 Blueberries
.50 ounce Lemon Simple Syrup
1.50 ounces Bourbon
dash bitters
Absinthe

Instructions

Place berries and simple syrup in the bottom of a shaker. Muddle to combine until berries are broken up.
Add in bourbon and bitters. Top with ice.
Shake vigorously to combine.
Spray or rinse glass with absinthe.
Strain into glass with ice.
