A refreshing combination in a watermelon cocktail perfect for summer porch sipping!

We have been having a quite the odd spring this year, with hot weather in the early spring, then cold and rainy weather that has made spring seem rather fleeting the past few weeks. We have been really looking forward to those late spring days where the days are perfectly warm and delightful to sit on the porch with a cocktail relaxing!

Watermelon Bourbon

With this weekend looking like the weather is going to be a wonderful, we wanted a drink that would be a perfect porch sipper, the Watermelon Bourbon Cooler!

What to Make With a Watermelon Cocktail?

We were thinking about what might be a great cocktail to wrap up the end of spring and kick off summer, and one flavor we kept thinking about was watermelon (especially since our boys keep asking us if its time to get a watermelon!) While its a little early in the season for a watermelon, we luckily had a way we could get that prime summer watermelon flavor even when watermelons aren’t in season by reaching for Tropicana Watermelon!

There is nothing like biting into a cool watermelon slice on a hot summer day, the juicy sweetness cool and refreshing and a real treat. Watermelon is a really great flavor to use in cocktails as its natural sweetness is great for mixing in with other flavors like citrus, herbs and many spirits, all while bringing a definite summer feel to a drink.

Tropicana Watermelon bottles up that great watermelon flavor and brings it to your glass so when you have a special occasion or just the urge to indulge in some mixology it is ready to go!

What Flavors to Add to Watermelon?

With such nice weather and a lazy weekend calling our name, we wanted a drink that would be a great porch sipper. Most people think of mixing watermelon with gin or vodka, but one spirit that works really well is that venerable southern spirit, bourbon.

Watermelon and bourbon makes for a great combination, the natural caramel sweetness of the bourbon pairing really well with the cool fruity sweetness of the watermelon.

We started out by mixing a nice mellow bourbon with a nice splash of the Tropicana Watermelon, which by itself was a great combination! Try watermelon in our Watermelon Aperol Spritz, too!

What are Needed for the Watermelon Bourbon Cooler Cocktail?

  • Mint Simple Syrup
  • Lime Juice
  • Bourbon
  • Watermelon Juice

While the combination of the watermelon juice and bourbon was pretty good, a great cocktail needs to really pop. A squeeze of fresh lime juice added a nice fresh citrus note, which really brought out the fruity sweetness of the watermelon. Of course any drink called the cooler needs something to add a little cool edge to it, and what better than a bit of mint?

We used a combination of a little mint simple syrup and fresh mint to bring a cool herbal quality to the Watermelon Bourbon Cooler.

The Watermelon Bourbon Cooler is a great combination of sweet watermelon, smooth bourbon and crisp citrus.  The mint syrup adds just the right amount of cool sweetness while the fresh mint garnish perfumes the cocktail and makes the Watermelon Bourbon Cooler a fantastic sipper for those days when the weather is just perfect!

Cheers!

Ooooh, snap! I cannot wait to try this when I'm not pregnant. We love that Tropicana Watermelon right now. Actually, a mocktail version of this wouldn't be too bad either :) Pinned for later!
