A fruity version of the classic Ramos Gin Fizz!

In the world of craft cocktails there is one cocktail that literally is a workout in a glass, one that requires a little cardio along with the ingredients! It’s a classic invented way back in 1880’s New Orleans. The Ramos Gin Fizz is one of those cocktails who legend is almost as good as the drink!

Flavored Gin Fizz

We wanted to bring a little summer flavor to this classic, so we made Raspberry Peach Ramos Gin Fizz!

What is the History of the Ramos Gin Fizz?

The Ramos Gin Fizz is one of those drinks that comes with a great backstory that borders on a legend. Originally invented by Henry C. Ramos to serve at his Imperial Cabinet Saloon, which was once a stalwart of the New Orleans bar scene before Prohibition. Originally conceived in the 1880’s, the Fizz soon proved to be a popular drink! Its popularity ensured the bar rail of the Imperial Cabinet Saloon was soon packed.

The Ramos Gin Fizz was a great summer drink, sweet and tart, topped up with a cool pillowy smooth puff of creamy froth. The cool sweet drink was perfect for the humid heat of New Orleans! Once the residents of New Orleans got a taste of it, they found a rival to the other famous New Orleans cocktail the Sazerac.

The popularity of the drink soon found them selling more than 1000 a day which required a whole bunch of bar backs just to keep the drinks going over the rail!

How do you Make A Ramos Gin Fizz?

The only downfall to the drink is that to achieve that amazing foam, the drink had to be shaken far longer than your typical drink. This is to fully emulsify the egg whites, with the specifying the time to shake to be measured in minutes. This is where the legend part of the Ramos Gin Fizz starts, as the time specified in the original recipe seems to have been lost to the sands of time!

Some folks call for shaking for 2 minutes, some insist on as much as 12 minutes. Either way its a heck of a lot of shaking which makes for one great bartender workout!

While we love the original, we did want to add a little fresh flavor of summer by adding a splash of peach and raspberry syrups. We love the flavor combination of peach and raspberry. They are sweet and tart together which really plays well with the sour citrus juices and the herbs of the gin.

We also loved the delicate pastel pink the syrups added to the foam.

How to Make A Ramos Gin Fizz

Then we decided to make two versions. One with the traditional bartender workout, and one a more modern method that spares your muscles! For the traditional method, we did a dry shake without ice for one minute, then added ice and gave that drink a shake for around 5 minutes before straining into a highball glass.

The traditional method resulted in a beautiful rich creamy foam with lots of fine bubbles. Also. if you mix enough of these, your arms will look fabulous!

What Ingredients are Needed for the Raspberry Peach Fizz?

  • Club Soda
  • Raspberry Simple Syrup
  • Peach Simple Syrup
  • Lime Juice
  • Gin
  • Lemon Juice
  • Egg White
  • Cream

For our modern method, we decided to use an immersion blender (if you don’t have one, a regular blender would do the same thing) and got the egg white fully emulsified with just a quick pulse. After getting a good foam started, we poured the drink into a shaker with some ice. Then gave it a quick shake to chill it and then strained it into a highball glass.

While this was much quicker than the traditional method, we did notice that the foam wasn’t quite as luxurious. The foam of the traditional method was better (but our arms didn’t burn, so maybe the trade off is worth it!)
