These great old fashioned ingredients are perfect for any time of the year, but this Ginger Old Fashioned is fabulous in the fall and winter! A great combination of flavors, it is a twist on the classic cocktail!

The Old Fashioned has been one of the most popular cocktails in the recent craft cocktail craze, partially due to its popularity from Mad Men and America’s thirst for whiskey.  Technically one of the “original” classic whiskey cocktails, the Old Fashioned is appropriately named, dating back to the 1880’s, where it was commonly consumed in the heart of whiskey country, Louisville, Kentucky.

Old Fashioned Variations

This recipe adds a bit of a spicy citrus bite to the original recipe. Adding anything to an Old Fashioned is blasphemy in the eyes of some snobby cocktail folks, but who cares, its darn delicious! We like this version, the ginger Old Fashioned.

Old Fashioned Recipes

For these Old Fashioned ingredients we used clementines in place of the typical orange. This gave the cocktail a brighter citrus, while the ginger adds a fresh spicy bite that brings a bit of an Asian flair to the drink. We liked the way that the Bulleit Rye pulls out the heat of the ginger and really makes the citrus shin in this ginger Old Fashioned. Make sure to check out this Holiday Ginger Flip, too!

Using our brandied cherry brings a nice hint of sweet fruit and vanilla notes that give this version of the Old Fashioned a really nice depth! Here are some more tools to help you out, a clear ice makermuddler, angostura bitters, and ice ball mold.
