The Two Holiday Mules We Tried Out For You!

The Moscow Mule is a popular classic cocktail that is a simple, refreshing and very delicious cocktail that both of us have fallen in love with.  It is an all purpose cocktail, pairing with lots of foods and is one of the cocktails we make year round. A nice combination of vodka, lime and ginger beer, the Moscow Mule is solid foundation to build from. With simple modifications using seasonal ingredients, it is easy to create festive new cocktails.  Two such ingredients, cranberry and pomegranate, make perfect holiday additions to the classic Moscow Mule. We love entertaining and we always love sharing the cheer with our friends, so with the holiday parties we will be enjoying over the next few weeks we decided that a holiday cocktail or two would be in order.

The Pomegrante Mule

The Pomegranate Mule

  • 1.5 oz Pomegranate vodka
  • .5 lime juice
  • 3 oz POM pomegranate juice
  • 6 oz ginger beer (We like Crabbie’s Ginger Beer)

Fill a mug or a rocks glass with crushed ice. Add in the vodka, lime juice and pomegranate.  Top up with ginger beer. Garnish with candied cranberries or a lime wheel.

The pomegranate mule had a nice rich red color and a slightly sweet and tangy with a nice fruity note from the pomegranate.  Sweeter than the cranberry version, this is ideal for those who would like a sweeter cocktail.

The Cranberry Holiday Mule

The Cranberry Mule

  • 1.5 oz Cranberry Mule
  • .5 lime juice
  • 3 oz cranberry juice
  • .5 oz Cranberry simple syrup
  • 5 oz ginger beer

Fill a mug or a rocks glass with crushed ice. Add in the vodka, lime juice, syrup and cranberry juice.  Top up with ginger beer. Garnish with candied cranberries or a lime wheel.

The cranberry mule is more tart than the pomegranate version and needs a bit of added sweetness from the syrup to balance the tartness of the cranberry juice.  We wanted a richer cranberry flavor so we used the reserved syrup from the Sugared Cranberries we made earlier this month.

Which is your favorite? I like both cranberries and pomegranate - so which would you recommend trying first.

We both thought the pomegranate was really good. We liked the cranberry, but its a bit more tart that made it not quite as good as the pomegranate.

The cranberry mule sounds SO good! It sounds like a more sophistacted version of my old college standby: cranberry and vodka ;)

We love the mules and tend to find they are one of our standby drinks when the creative cocktails are slow to come. Plus they go really well with just about anything!

I will be making one of these this weekend for my holiday party. I made a apple cider version for Thanksgiving and it was a hit.

These were both really good. We started out having a "shootout" to see which we liked better, but we liked both of them. I will say the sugared cranberry garnish made the drink, and the reserved syrup that you get from making them was really fantastic. The cranberry syrup was sweet and with a nice balanced flavor of cranberries. It would be great in a homemade soda too!
