With October being right around the corner, like trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches competing for time on our calendar! We definitely are feeling that fall is in the air. While we were looking at the calendars we noticed a day that we thought might be near and dear to our readers’ hearts, National Vodka Day! Or, make a great Christmas cocktail with our cranberry Ornament Cocktail!

Sweet and Sour Cocktail

We were kicking around some ideas for a cocktail we could make to celebrate National Vodka Day on October 4th, when we were approached by the folks at Smirnoff to try out their new product, Smirnoff Sourced Cranberry Apple Vodka.

What to do with the Vodka?

Naturally faced with the prospect of getting some vodka in the mail, we jumped at the chance to get Smirnoff Sourced Cranberry Apple Vodka. Then we with a cranberry cocktail recipe that not only would help us celebrate National Vodka Day. It would also capture some of those great flavors that fall brings.

With our bottle of Smirnoff Sourced Cranberry Apple Vodka on the way, we decided to embrace the bold flavor of cranberry and make a Cranberry Sweet and Sour.

Featuring a cranberry sweet and sour mix, the Smirnoff Sourced Cranberry Apple Vodka, a dash of aromatic bitters and topped with a splash of soda water. This Cranberry Sweet and Sour is a crisp, refreshing cocktail perfect for sipping on a crisp fall day!

What is Smirnoff Sourced?

Smirnoff Sourced is Smirnoff’s new line of vodkas that are naturally flavored with real fruit juices. This is to create a flavored vodka with more intense authentic flavors than your typical flavored vodkas. Smirnoff Sourced Vodkas are gluten free and use no high fructose corn syrup. This makes Smirnoff Sourced a more mature vodka, not overly sweet, the flavors less candy like.

The vodka was a deep red, the color of real cranberries, an aroma of tart cranberries and crisp apple that smelled like the fall fruits.

For the Cranberry Sweet and Sour, we wanted a fresh made cranberry sweet and sour mix. We started out making a syrup with fresh cranberries, sugar and water, a sweet syrup with a bold cranberry flavor.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Cranberry Cocktail?

  • Cranberry Sweet and Sour Mix
    • Sugar
    • Water
    • Cranberries
    • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Cocktail
    • Cranberry Sweet and Sour Mix
    • Soda Water
    • Smirnoff Sourced Cranberry Apple Vodka
    • Angostura Bitters

To bring a sour component to the sour mix, we used apple cider vinegar. The combination of sweet cranberry syrup and sour apple cider vinegar making a nice sweet and sour mix that played across the different areas of the palette.

Mixing in the fresh sweet and sour mix with the Smirnoff Sourced Cranberry and Apple Vodka really brought out the distinctive flavors of tart cranberry and crisp sweet apple. A dash of aromatic bitters adds a layer of warm baking spices that really evoked the flavors of fall, reminiscent of a fresh fruit crisp.

A splash of soda water adds a bit of bubbly fizz that helps bring out the aroma of the spices and fruits!

Cheers!
