A Spicy tequila and pineapple cocktail! One of our best tequila drinks packs a punch!

When the calendar rolls around to the end of April, it never fails that our social media feed fills up with lots of pictures and recipes of margarita. These are to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. While we love a good margarita, there can be more to tequila than just the margarita. While we are very familiar with gin and all kinds of various whiskeys, until recently we hadn’t really explored tequila based cocktails.

We have run across and tried lots of tequila cocktails, as we are sure you have, too! One common denominator that we kept running across was they tended to be very sweet and full of citrus. While we like sweet citrusy cocktails, we also enjoy cocktails that bring something new to the table.

Soltado Spicy Añejo tequila had send us a bottle, and we knew we could recreate the flavors.  We knew the cocktail that we would come up with wouldn’t be your typical cocktail.

Where is Tequila Made?

Most tequila distilleries are located in Mexico. The tequila is grown by agave farmers who live and work the land where the blue agave are grown. Different from many of the large tequila producers, there are smaller farmers that profit from the success of their tequila. The farmers choose the the choice portion of their harvest for their tequila to give it an ultra smooth and distinctive flavor.

The select blue agave is crushed and the agave nectar is mixed with yeast to start the fermentation process.

The raw tequila is placed in new oak barrels.  Aged in oak barrels gives the tequila a rich caramel color and add a layer of complex flavor.

Soltado then infuses their aged tequila with serrano peppers from a farmers market. They source them near the distillery and natural cinnamon to bring a burst of spice and fire.

How did we use the Spicy Tequila?

When we make cocktails, we always taste all the ingredients by themselves. This is how we know how they will taste so we can see how they will play together when mixed. When we tried the Soltado Spicy Añejo, we found this tequila will definitely bring the heat! The scent of the serrano peppers is almost overwhelming, so we tuned down our version.

Hints of cinnamon and oak with a rich sweet agave flavor are present. But, the heat is the real star here, as the serrano peppers make their presence known with a big blast of heat that quickly spreads from the tongue to cover the whole palate.

Best Tequila Drinks

While this could be a sipping spirit for those who really enjoy spicy drinks, we both felt it would be better to use in a cocktail where we want to bring some heat. This is without using raw peppers or a hot sauce. With this in mind, we came up with the Piña de Fuego, a spicy añejo tequila cocktail that definitely isn’t your typical sweet cocktail in one of our best tequila drinks!

What did we mix with the Spicy Tequila?

We started out with the Spicy Añejo tequila, added some cinnamon into the infusion, as well as some salt. When we made the cocktail, we knew we needed some fresh pineapple juice. Pineapple and serrano go well together, the sweet acidic edge of the pineapple helps balance the bite of the peppers while adding a wonderful smooth texture to the drink.

Fresh squeezed lemon juice, a splash of sweet orange flavor from Triple Sec and sage simple syrup add a sweet and sour component. The drink that lets the heat slowly build as you sip on what we think is one of the best tequila drinks.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Pina de Fuego?

  • Lemon Juice
  • Brown Sugar
  • Cilantro
  • Sage Simple Syrup
  • Anejo Tequila
  • Triple Sec
  • Pineapple Juice

We garnished it with some fresh cilantro and a brown sugar rim that finishes the drink with a tropical richness. This drink is sure to bring the heat to your next cocktail party!

Cheers!

What a super fun drink! I do love añejo tequilas but don't think I've ever tried this brand before. I will have to see if I can find it locally! Thanks for the tip!
