Raspberry Gimlet – A Gin and Raspberry Cocktail

Last Updated on July 27, 2023 by Leah Hall

A twist on the classic, this raspberry gimlet is perfect for summer! The sweet raspberries play well with the bite of the lime! Cheers!

This drink takes the refreshing classic gin cocktail, the Gimlet, and adds fresh raspberries to bring a hint of fruity sweetness that makes it taste a bit like a raspberry limeade. The gimlet was popular in the warm colonies of the British Empire as a way to try prevent scurvy, and traditionally consisted of gin and sweetened lime juice.

We thought this beautiful raspberry gimlet would we a gorgeous take of the classic cocktail, with bold gin notes, fresh lime juice and raspberry syrup.

Plus, we love a good gimlet around here: Blood Orange Gimlet, White Chocolate Gimlet, Rhubarb Gimlet and Basil Gimlet.

Raspberry Cocktail

In the original recipe, sweetened lime juice was used in lieu of fresh lime juice and sugar syrup as fresh limes were hard to come by in the wide flung corners of Britain.  And let’s be honest, it’s hard here in Omaha sometimes too! Using fresh lime juice brings a brighter tart note to this version of the Gimlet and makes for a very refreshing drink for a warm summer day.

It’s also gorgeous, that color though! The color makes it perfect for Valentine’s Day or any day that you need a pink drink! As long as there are fresh raspberries you have a winner in this easy 4 ingredient cocktail!

So easy for a home bartender to make and easy to sip, this tart sweet combo is tasty!

History of the Gimlet Cocktail

A 1928 description of the drink was: gin, and a spot of lime. The description in the 1953 Raymond Chandler novel The Long Goodbye says that “a real gimlet is half gin and half Rose’s lime juice cordial and nothing else.” This is also the recipe in The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930). It states one half Plymouth Gin and one half Rose’s Lime Juice Cordial. Try our Strawberry Basil Gimlet or Blueberry Cucumber Gimlet, too!

The name is contested. It may be named after the tool for drilling small holes or after surgeon Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette (1857–1943), who is said to have first added lime cordial to the daily gin allotment of the men of the Royal Navy to help combat scurvy on long voyages. Who knows, but it’s a fun drink for sure!

Ingredients for the Raspberry Gimlet

  • London Dry Gin – London Dry Gin gives such a great flavor to this fresh fruit gimlet. This is a summery cocktail and the lingering finish of the gin makes for a fabulous signature cocktail.
  • Lime Juice – fresh lime juice is the best, we know! It gives a fresh brightness to the cocktail.
  • Raspberries – fresh raspberries are the way to go in this recipe. As well as a fresh raspberry garnish. If you need to use frozen raspberries you can, just let them thaw before making the drink, they can be a fine option to make this drink all year long.
  • Simple Syrup – our homemade simple syrup is easy to make and so much better than buying at the store! This is the easy way to add a little bit sweet to your drink!

Vodka Gimlet vs Gin Gimlet

Totally up to you on what to use as the base spirit. Personally, we like the gin version better, but either way it’s tasty! We recommend The Botanist, Monkey 47, Grey Goose or Bombay Sapphire for this cocktail. Other gins will definitely work, but those are our personal favorites! Try our tasty Lilac Gimlet, too!

How to Make a Raspberry Gimlet

This twist on the classic cocktail is great for the summer months, especially with fresh berries.  This simple combination of botanical gin, part lime juice, and syrup with berries makes for a tasty natural pairing.

This is an easy shaken cocktail. But first, muddle the fresh berries and syrup in the bottom of your cocktail shaker. In the meantime, make sure you have a chilled glass by adding ice cubes to your coupe.

Add lime juice to your shaker, along with the gin and some ice. Shake to combine. Dump out the ice from the coupe, and strain your cocktail shaker into your coupe, using a double strain. This is using a fine mesh strainer along with a Hawthorne Strainer to strain out all the raspberry seeds. Garnish with fresh raspberries!

Tips & Tricks

  • Cocktail Shaker – Being that this cocktail has fresh juice, it is a shaken drink, not a cocktail using a mixing glass. Juice cocktails are shaken with a cocktail shaker.
  • Chilled Cocktail Glass – a cold coupe makes for a perfect drink. So either put the coupe into the freezer, or put ice in the coupe to chill while shaking.
  • Garnish – fresh raspberries on a cocktail pick are a great choice for this cocktail. But, a lime slice or lemon slice work as well.
  • Citrus Juice – feel free to use tart lemon juice instead of lime. Lime is the classic choice, but lemon works, too. As long as it’s sharp citrus, this will bring a freshness to the cocktail. Use a citrus juicer!
  • Egg White – obviously, egg white isn’t a classic ingredient choice, but if you add an egg white, this will make a Raspberry Sour cocktail.
  • Gin – if you want a really pink cocktail, without just the fresh berries, use a pink gin, too. Make it super pink!

Cheers!

Just tried this recipe using frozen puree of raspberries of capfruit, it is very very nice and balanced! I added a little bit more of sugar syrup because I felt for me it was a bit sour , but for others it could be good enough. Thank you!
