A fabulous winter version of the classic sidecar, with blood orange juice, this Blood Orange Cocktail is perfect!

In the world of cocktails, there are nearly an infinitive variety of cocktails that are offered up to drinkers, but there are some cocktails that are considered great as a foundation for building on. One of these cocktails is the sidecar, one of the simplest of all cocktails, with a spirit, a sour and a sweet all in balance to create a tart, spirit forward cocktail.

This simplicity is part of the reason the sidecar is perfect for riffing on, which is how we ended up with our Blood Orange Sidecar, which is such an easy rum and blood orange cocktail!

Classic Sidecar Cocktail

The sidecar is one cocktail that any bartender should have in their repertoire as it is an absolute classic having been around since the last days of World War I. Reputed to have been invented by the folks at the Ritz Hotel in Paris where American, French and English soldiers commonly visited for a little R&R.

This libation proved to be popular with the soldiers and its popularity carried on to their home countries which helped spread this cocktail to bars all over the world!

Naturally, once a cocktail get to a new location and the locals have a chance to play with it, it starts to take on a life of its own as new variations are created! For our take on the sidecar, The Blood Orange Sidecar, we decided we wanted to use one one of our favorite citrus fruits, the blood orange, to bring a little color and warmth to this traditional sour cocktail.

What flavors for this sidecar?

We love the intense orange flavor that blood oranges bring to a cocktail (check out our Blood and Bourbon!) plus the color is just plain gorgeous! Blood oranges also bring a little hint of raspberry flavor in their juice, making for a fun ingredient to use in cocktails!

The Blood Orange Sidecar uses a combination of brandy and rum as the base spirits, both of which pair well with the tartness of fresh citrus. Brandy is the traditional base spirit found in the sidecar, but for this one we wanted to add in a little brown sugar warmth with a splash of rum.

Orange liqueur adds a bit more orange flavor while adding a bit of sweetness to balance the tartness of the citrus brought by the blood orange and lime juices.

What Ingredients are Needed for the Blood Orange Sidecar?

  • Brandy
  • Blood Orange Juice
  • Orange Liqueur
  • Lime Juice
  • Aged Rum

A beautiful balance of sweet and sour, the Blood Orange Sidecar is a favorite of ours for it simplicity, gorgeous color and elegance. Adding blood orange juice gives a deep rich red color to the drink, making it a striking drink to add to any dinner table. If you want another cocktail with blood orange, the Blood and Bourbon or the Blood Orange Gin Sour are the way to go!

Cheers!
